Vernaccia di San Gimignano: the best samples from the 2026 Anteprima

The city of towers, San Gimignano, a UNESCO site since 1990, celebrated Vernaccia with the Anteprima for the Italian and international press on May 28 and 29, 2026, marking 750 years since the first historical record and 60 years since the first Italian DOC.

There were 147 companies that claimed the designation in the 2025 harvest, 81 of which were members of the Consortium. The latest production figures for 2025 are positive: 6,912,000 kg of grapes, equivalent to 4,838,400 liters of wine, and 4,207,057 bottles were placed on the market.

The tastings have therefore shown clear trends in the glasses, namely more soil, minerality, more verticality with less stylistic softness, greater study of Pliocene soils and the differences between areas, and therefore, selections of plots. Vernaccia has an enormous pedological variability, which is yet to be explored.
The Riserve wines are the extra card for future reputation, providing depth, aromatic complexity, and splendid evolutions over time.

The 2025s are mostly homogeneous, centered, well balanced with adequate freshness and a marked flavor, and they pair beautifully, as we have confirmed at the lunches and dinners over the past few days.
The 2024 and 2023 vintage Riservas are important wines, and in the majority of the samples, with great potential for evolution. The tasting of older vintages during the press tour in the cellars highlighted how, dispelling the myth that Italian whites are ready for consumption within a year of the harvest, Vernaccia has a valuable ally in time, capable of transforming youthful freshness into a complex and fascinating maturity.
