Luigi Salvo was born in Palermo on January 16, 1964. After completing his scientific and medical studies, during his hospital internship in the early 1990s, he became increasingly fascinated by the world of wine and enrolled in courses offered by Enotime, O.N.A.V., and A.I.S. He qualified as a sommelier and obtained certification as an A.I.S. (Italian Sommelier Association) Official Speaker and Taster. He is also the A.I.S. Delegate for Palermo. As a journalist for ASA Press (Italian Agri-Food Press Association), in 1999, he published an annotated guide to the best Sicilian wines. Since November 2001, he has been writing online for tigulliovino.it, Italy’s most visited wine website, where he runs the “Vini a Confronto” (Wine Comparison) column. In 2003, he launched his own communication portal, luigisalvoilmondodelvino.it.
He has collaborated extensively with trade and general-interest publications, including “Euposia,” “Accademia del Sole,” “L’Arte del Vino,” “Enotria,” the monthly magazine “Focus,” “Il Sommelier Italiano,” the magazine of the Association of Italian Maîtres, Restaurateurs and Hoteliers, and the Guide to Good Wines of Italy published by the Italian Touring Club. He writes for the official magazine of the Italian Sommelier Association, “De Vinis,” and is the editor of winereality.wordpress.com and the web TV channel Wine Reality. Among his other commitments, he writes for the news website of the Sicilian Regional Institute of Vine and Wine, vitevinonews.it, and hosts the TV segment Vino & Sapori on the satellite channels Oasi TV, Viva l’Italia Channel, and eight Sicilian regional stations. As part of the TV News program broadcast on 10 Sicilian stations, he hosts the TV segment “Il Borsino del Vino.” He also writes for “espresso.repubblica.it” and selects the best emerging chef in Southern Italy for Luigi Cremona’s “Cooking for Wine.” His expertise in organoleptic analysis led him to become an international wine judge; he has served on the judging panels of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, the Wine Challenge of London, the Vinul.ru Excellence Awards, the Concorso Internazionale Selezione del Sindaco, and other international wine competitions. His deep passion for sharing knowledge about wine and food, coupled with his enjoyment of teamwork, led him to embark on a new adventure in February 2012 by founding and managing “giornalevinocibo.com.” In 2015, he authored the educational books for the Italian Sommelier Association.
He founded the communications company Gustomedialab and serves as a communications consultant for numerous Italian and international wineries. Since October 2021, he has been the editorial director of the Italian wine newspaper vinup.it.
