Gewürztraminer “Vigna Pirchschrait” 2008 J. Hofstätter

At Tenuta J. Hofstätter in Termeno, we are welcomed by  Martin Foradori Hofstätter, who has been at the helm of the family business for over thirty years.
The winery is housed in a historic 16th-century building, originally built as a post house. It was founded in 1907 by Josef Hofstätter, who, upon his death and having no children, entrusted the task of developing the winery to Konrad Oberhofer, his niece’s husband.
Oberhofer was credited with being one of the first to market bottled wines and to vinify the grapes from each individual vineyard separately, indicating their origin on the bottle.
In 1959, with the marriage of Paolo Foradori to Sieglinde, Oberhofer’s daughter, the vineyard holdings of the two families were combined. Paolo Foradori was the first winemaker in South Tyrol to indicate the “Vigna” (vineyard) on the bottle.

Among the many wines we tasted, the Gewürztraminer “Vigna Pirchschrait” was truly exceptional.

The Kolbenhof vineyard is located in the hamlet of Sella, in Termeno, on the western slope of the Adige Valley, where the morning sun shines brightly and a cool breeze blows in the evening. The estate also includes the historic Gewürztraminer “Vigna Pirchschrait” plot, which gives rise to the wine of the same name, which we also tasted in the 2008 vintage.

After a long 10-year maturation period on the lees, it boasts a beautifully elegant nose and a palate rich in freshness. On the nose, it offers peach, candied tropical fruit, walnuts, toasted bread, and acacia honey, along with delightful spicy, menthol, and resin notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and multifaceted, with delightful aromas, rich flavor, infinite length, and enviably clean finish.
